Alexander K. Stubbs: Poetry

Looking For A Sunset

She’s walking wintered by-ways
dragging her feet
through puddles of leaf thickened
winter stew. She takes an occasional drag
on a cigarette
clenched tightly between nicotine stained fingers,
her down at heel boots beating on cracked sidewalks.
Clickety clack,clickety clack,
you have to go back little lady,
little lady go back.
But she walks on seeking a sunset for her drab life.
What has she to go back for she muses,
two manic kids,
snotty noses,
backsides to wipe,
and him in the boozer seven nights a week
before coming home bruising last nights bruises
if she speaks.
Pity and tears pity and tears,
tears for a lost little lady
seeking a sunset to wrap up her fears .
